A ductless mini split is a small heat pump that cools and heats your home with no ductwork. One outdoor unit connects to one or more indoor units through a wall opening about three inches wide. How does a ductless mini split work?
The outdoor unit holds the compressor. It moves refrigerant to each indoor unit through a slim bundle of lines called a line set. Each indoor unit, often called a head, cools or heats the room it sits in. There are no ducts, so no cooled air is lost in a hot attic on the way to the room.
Each head has its own remote or thermostat. That means one bedroom can stay cool at night while an empty room stays off. You only pay to condition the rooms you actually use.
Do mini splits heat as well as cool?
Yes. A mini split is a heat pump, so it works in both directions. In summer it moves heat out of the room. In winter it moves heat in.
